Littoral Vestiges Collection

Reimagining the coastal terrain of western Canada through abstraction. Using the idea of a landscape as a general means of organizing the space on the canvas, these paintings compress the monumental three-part division of sea, land, and sky into dense, horizontal bands. Like a Barnett Newman painting turned on its side, the flattened fields of colour are built up through layers of paint, and a variety of gestures and marks, creating a shallow, resonant space that draws from the spatial compression of Sean Scully. The collection title refers to the shoreline zone where sea meets land.
